Wonthaggi and Geelong (J'long!!!!)
It was sad to leave Tasmania (sadder to leave Gillian and Allan who made me so welcome and gave me an amazing Tasmanian experience). The flight to Melbourne went well and I eventually managed to find a hire car at the airport. There is a huge difference in the helpfullness of car hire staff, Tristan at Hertz was very helpful and next time I will definately book on line. The drive to Wonthaggi couldn't have been more straightforward, straight through the centre of Melbourne and 2 hours to get there. The Motel was lovely, very friendly staff and very handy for everything. Allan, you will never guess which fast food outlet was next door?? I eventually found Jim and Betty at their house, lovely to see them both. I went for a run on the old railway line before meeting Jim for dinner at the Wonthaggi workmens club. Monday first thing I went for a swim, had a look around the town then went with Jim to pick up Betty and take her out for the day. Jim drove me round the old mine sites and we went to the mine museum. We had lunch out before going to Phillip Island to see the GP circuit (and Kangaroos) and Churchill Island. We had icecream then Jim dropped me off. I hired a bike for an hour and a half (a brand new bike!!). Dinner at the wormens club again, I had cheesecake that was nearly as nice as my Mums!!!! Tuesday I left Wonthaggi early and drove to Sorrento for the ferry to Queenscliff. The drive to Geelong was easy and i found the park no problem. Joanne and Daniel have given me a lovely cabin for the 2 nights. In the afternoon we drove around the Bellerine Peninsula stopping for short walks at Portarlington, Queenscliff and Barwon Heads. We had a nice meal at Tony's , stopped off for some beer and then back home to look at pictures and ....... Kelly, you won't believe this, I have finally played the Wii!!!! I won at bowls and ski jumping , tennis was fun and I have a way to go at ski slalom!!!! This morning I went for a run along the river, passed the place where scary snakes come out in Summer!! We have had a lovely day driving down the Great Ocean Road. We started out at Torquay and Bells Beach, the surf capital of Australia. We then went on to see Southern Right Whales - swimming very close to the surfers, Mummy and baby Koala (see the picture), Kookaburra, Rosella (red and blue), Lorikeets (orange and green), Wallabies and amazingly, cows and sheep!!!!! We ended up at The Otway fly tree top walk in the rainforest. There are only 3 in Australia and one of them is used for the Ant and Dec TV show where TV celebs have to live in the rainforest and have to do tasks like eating bugs. It was awesome, very high and swayed a bit at times, 600m long. I have once again been totally spoiled. Moving on to Melbourne tomorrow.....
